T

he Kendal branch of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), located on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta in Kendal regency, Central Java, was damaged by a fire on Monday night at around 10 p.m. The fire broke out on the second floor of the building. Firefighters who arrived at the scene in five fire trucks managed to extinguish the flames within two hours.

Several of the BRI'€™s motorcycles and cars were completely destroyed by the fire, but the bank'€™s documentation and money reserves were spared as they had been stored in a fire-proof vault.

Kendal Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Harryo Sugihhartono said his officers were still investigating the cause of the blaze.

'€œWe have gathered some evidence and statements from a number of eyewitnesses,'€ he said.

Despite the fire, the bank opened on Tuesday, but with limited services.

'€œWe intend to serve our customers,'€ branch manager Yusni Kuswanto said.

Customers were able to make cash withdrawals via the bank'€™s E-Buzz mobile service, while administrative services were conducted out of nearby offices belonging to state forestry firm PT Perhutani.
