he Population and Civil Registration Agency apprehended a total of 371 new arrivals during a raid Wednesday in Palmerah subdistrict, West Jakarta.
They were asked to decide whether they planned to stay in Jakarta or return to their hometowns. If they want to stay in the city, they are required to apply for a Jakarta-based personal identity card and to have a job.
'West Jakarta is attractive to many new arrivals because it is home to hundreds of factories, cottage industries and so on,' civil registration agency head Purba Hutapea said following the raid.
He said anyone reporting their arrival to their respective neighborhood unit heads would be given temporary domicile cards, which would be effective for one year.
'Those wanting to become permanent residents are required to have full-time employment,' he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Warningsih, 40, from Pemalang, Central Jakarta, said she was applying for temporary domicile from a neighborhood in Palmerah while looking for a job. She said she was staying with her younger sister who was sponsoring her stay in the city.
