As more couples are opting to celebrate their nuptials in intimate surroundings, outdoor wedding receptions have become a new trend.

In tropical Indonesia where sunshine is abundant and open spaces with beautiful scenery are easy to find, it is now common to spot a wedding party on the beach or on a hill with lush paddy terraces in the background besides the usual city parks or home backyards.

The trend was well captured in the recent wedding exhibition Shades of Luxury at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta.

The Grand Ballroom and the entire mezzanine floor of the hotel were transformed into a Victorian-style garden with soft but warm lighting, sweet smells from the scented candles as well as quaint yet eye-catching decorations with the sounds of birds chirping from the corner of a hallway.

On opening night, designer Ivan Gunawan presented 15 wedding dresses themed '€œMadame Sakura'€ with rich surprise elements.

The entire collection came in a gradation of colors: white, off-white, peach and pink, while the last design was emulating the blossoming sakura '€” with layers of different colors. The designs came in both long and short dresses, all in light material that, according to Ivan, would be perfect for outdoor weddings.

'€œWedding dresses are not always white. It is the elegance and happiness of the bride wearing her dream gown that matters. For the materials and colors of the show, I combined dusty pink and soft green colors, which surprisingly turned out nice,'€ he says.

He used Palembang'€™s woven songket cloth as an obi (sash) for most of the gowns and each was embellished with intricately designed embroidered flowers.

Inspired by the sakura blossoms he saw during a recent trip to Japan, it took Ivan two months to produce the line. For the show, he invited dance maestro Didik Nini Thowok to perform a kabuki dance.

Dame of kebaya Anne Avanti presented luxurious gold with a touch of pink and white-on-white kebaya as well as full-embroidery body-hugging white dresses at the wedding fair jointly organized by the hotel and event planner Tiara Josodirdjo & Associates.

Designer Anindhita Soebroto for Faith Hope Love Bride, in collaboration with Wong Hang Distinguished Tailor, presented seven of her latest pieces that accentuate the silhouettes of the wearers.

Rising star Soko Wiyanto created hourglass-, S-shape and A-line silhouettes in his collection themed '€œMonochromance'€.

With the use of lace, embroidery and beads on each dress that comes in black or white, his designs gave out three-dimensional imagery as if they popped out of fairytale books.

Designer Fetty Rusli created wedding gowns that came in strong colors inspired by precious stones -- green emerald, blue sapphire, red ruby and diamond.

For her show, she brought 24 spectacular gowns from her Précieux (Precious) line.

'€œMany of my clients prefer gowns with solid colors and blue sapphire is the prima donna,'€ she said, predicting solid colors to be the new trend in 2015.

For the material, Fetty used organdy, chiffon and shantung silk as well as tulle in the predominated strapless and backless gowns.

'€œI would like to express how precious the bride is. All of the designs accentuate the beauty of the bride,'€ she says.
