AKARTA: A facade covering the eastern side of the 24-story Blok G building at City Hall compound collapsed on Thursday onto the Blok B building, where Deputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama's office is located.
The incident, which occurred at 4:20 p.m., caused panic, leading dozens of civil servants who were still at the office to evacuate. Most of the civil servants had gone home at 4 p.m., and Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo had also already left City Hall at the time of the incident. No one was injured in the incident.
While fleeing his office, Ahok only asked 'did something collapse?'
The deputy governor immediately instructed the general affairs bureau chief to investigate and to report the case to the police.
City secretary Saefulloh said the city would ask developer PT Jaya Konstruksi, as the contractor, to bear responsibility and repair the facade. 'The project was carried out in 2010 and 2011, so it has only been three years,' Saefulloh said. He added the city would also demand that the developer check the facade on the building's western side.
