Comments: Preventing fishermen from going out to sea

A

strong>Aug. 27, p3

Fuel scarcity nationwide has led to fishermen in a number of regions in the country being unable to go out to sea, forcing some to switch occupations.

At Belawan Port, North Sumatra, hundreds of fishermen are reported to have been unable to catch fish for the last week due to diesel fuel shortages.

Your comments:

The current government needs to assist the incoming administration in starting to reduce the fuel subsidies as of today, in order to help minimize the impact on the state budget and reduce panic-buying, hoarding and chaos in general.

I quote: '€œFuel scarcity nationwide has led to fishermen in a number of regions in the country being unable to go out to sea.'€ Please send fishermen to my how-to-use-a-paddle school (branches in Tanjung Priok, Sungai Pakning, Sorong and Hotel Alexis).

I can'€™t understand why the president-elect even bothered to meet with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. He has done nothing for 10 years, so isn'€™t it too optimistic to expect any action during his last two months in office?

Back to using sails, boys. It'€™s environmentally friendly and free!

There are too many fishing boats and too many fishermen operating in Indonesian waters for this activity to be sustainable in the long term. The fishing efforts have to be dramatically reduced, large maritime areas should be closed to fishing and there should be a moratorium on fishing the most vulnerable fish species.

I'€™m sure these are the same guys using nothing but the most sustainable and responsible fishing practices out there, morally upright citizens who truly appreciate the unmatched richness of Indonesia'€™s marine ecosystem, and who would never, ever, under any circumstances, exceed quotas, fish in protected areas, catch endangered species, fin sharks, use excessive long lines, practice bottom trawling or, God forbid, dynamite!

No, no, these guys are probably all respectful spear fishers and coral farmers. No doubt about it. May God give them the diesel they need.

If president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo is willing to share responsibility for the unpopular move to raise the prices of fuel and gas, why is President Yudhoyono so reluctant? Is it because he does not want to take even half the responsibility? He cares more for his image than for the well-being of the Indonesian republic'€™s economic health!
