he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) hinted on Friday that KPK prosecutors would demand a maximum life sentence for graft and money laundering suspect Anas Urbaningrum, the former Democratic Party chairman.
"Based on our observations of the ongoing trial, we don't find him [Anas] cooperative. He is trying to obstruct the ongoing trial by trying to influence witnesses," said KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto.
"This behavior can be categorized as an obstruction of justice. This is not yet conclusive but KPK prosecutors [I think] should demand a maximum sentence [of life]."
He added that the commission leaders and prosecutors would meet immediately to further discuss the life sentence option.
"If you look [at his behavior] closely, behind his innocent face, there is a systematic effort to influence witnesses," he said.
The commission charged Anas with Article 12 of the 1999 Corruption Law for his alleged corruption, while for his money laundering he was charged under Article 3 of the 2002 Money Laundering Law. Collectively, both articles carry a maximum life sentence for a graft suspect.
Anas is slated to attend his trial on Sept. 11, during which the court will hear KPK prosecutors' sentence demand for the disgraced politician.
If KPK prosecutors demand a life sentence for Anas, it will become the second-highest sentence demand in the country.
The commission previously sought a life sentence, approved by the Jakarta Corruption Court, for former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar.
Akil was found guilty of corruption and money laundering. (nfo)
