Lukman's high hopes for amicable resolution to PPP rift

eligious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin, who is also deputy chairman of the United Development Party (PPP), said he remained optimistic that the party's internal conflict would be be settled amicably.

'€œWe hope to be able to resolve the problem soon,'€ Lukman said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

There have been growing concerns that the rift between senior PPP officials would end up with one of the groups establishing a new party.

Lukman said, right now, it was up to the Law and Human Rights Ministry to consider which of the warring parties had the legitimacy to claim PPP leadership.

Two PPP members have reported improvements in the party's organizational structure, including the replacement of the party's top officials. Both Suryadharma Ali and Emron Pangkapi have claimed that they have the legitimacy to become party chairman.

This latest conflict followed a previous disagreement between a group of PPP officials under deputy chairman Emron Pangkapi, who dismissed then-chairman Suryadharma Ali from his post when he was named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for his alleged role in the mismanagement of haj funds.(dic)(++++)
