URAKARTA: The CISM World Military Parachuting Championship is set to commence on Friday in Surakarta, Central Java, for a 10-day competition featuring 406 military athletes from 42 countries.
The local administration said they had prepared a cultural parade to welcome the participants.
'We will show off [Surakara culture] to them because this is a promotional occasion and we expect them to come again ' not as delegation members but as tourists,' Eny Tyasni Suzanna, head of the cultural and tourism office, said on Wednesday.
Surakarta, or more popularly known as Solo, has been chosen as the host for the 38th edition of the sporting event, which will be joined by 42 of 158 member countries grouped under Conseil International Du Sport Militaire (CISM), or the International Military Sports Council.
Founded in 1948, the event aims 'to contribute to world peace by uniting armed forces through sports', according CISM website (cism-milsport.org).
Soldiers, who may previously have met on the battlefield, now meet in friendship on the sports playing field.
Army Brig. Gen. Endang Sodik, the head of the organizing committee, said the city was fully prepared for the competition and hoped that the event would help attract visitors and bring about economic benefits.
