Text your say: Addressing the haze

Y

our comments on the ratification of a decade-old regional haze treaty by the House of Representatives, following pressure from neighboring countries over forest fires on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan:

A decade ago ASEAN countries agreed on a regional haze treaty. The Indonesian government, through the House, has endorsed a trans-boundary haze treaty in the last two days, which means Indonesia is obliged to mitigate air pollution.

To prevent forest fires and haze the government needs to tightly control the plantation companies. If it has evidence of wrongdoing, the government should punish them as heavily as possible to create a deterrent effect.

It'€™s nothing to do with pressure from our neighbors. This is for the sake of our own country.

I am in Penang right now and there'€™s very bad haze here from forest fires in Sumatra. Everyone is cursing Indonesia here! I thought President SBY flew there and resolved the matter?

Malam

Don'€™t you say! It was really bad today; plus, there was the usual Saturday blackout, today lasting though for more than eight hours in Central Pekanbaru. Regarding the '€œthick fog, allegedly locating from [...]'€, who really cares from where it comes?

The fact is that it was there, thick and stinky '€” and it was not fog (which is vaporized water), but smog or haze, originating  from purposefully laid forest fires to clear peatland; the locally famous shortcut-way to make space for even more oil palm plantations.

This is the second time this year. Remember February 2014?
