span class="inline inline-center">The Denpasar Police have unveiled two drug factories, a new find in Bali, and arrested four suspects: the owner, the drug maker, the dealer and the courier.

Denpasar Police chief Sr. Comr. Djoko Hari Utomo told the media on Friday that the drug factories were located at a house on Jl. Buana Kubu in Denpasar and at a villa in Kaliasem village, Buleleng regency. The police seized more than 30 kilograms of narcotic precursor and equipment used to produce crystal methamphetamine and ecstasy pills.

'€œThese are the first drug factories uncovered in Bali. The suspects planned to distribute the drugs in Bali,'€ Djoko said.

The police received the first hint from residents who reported that a man frequently conducted drug transactions in his house. The police raided the house of I Gusti Ngurah Surya Wibawa on Jl. Buana Kubu, Denpasar at 11 a.m. on Tuesday and found ecstasy precursor weighing 162 grams and hundreds of tablets.

The police later had Wibawa call his friend, I Nyoman Sudarmawan, and tell the latter to come to his house. Sudarmawan arrived around 30 minutes later and was in possession of equipment to make ecstasy.

Wibawa hinted at the involvement of another culprit, Donisius Selvarek, who lived in a rented room on Jl. Tukad Batanghari in Denpasar. The police found several failed attempts at ecstasy pills on a table. Donisius told the police that he made the pills at Sudarmawan'€™s house and revealed that the production was funded by Wayan Artawan, who lived in Seririt village in Buleleng regency.

Artawan, who was apprehended on the same day, told the police about the drug factory on Jl. Daman in Kayu Putih village, Sukasada subdistrict, Buleleng. The police found drug precursor and equipment to produce crystal meth at the villa on Wednesday. The precursor, weighing more than 30 kg, comprised many kinds of powder, tablets and liquids.

  • The house in Denpasar produced ecstasy pills, while the villa in Buleleng produced crystal meth

The police also raided another villa in Kaliasem village in Buleleng, where they found similar equipment used to produce crystal meth and 187 grams of meth substances.

The suspects told the police they had used the villa in Kaliasem village to produce the meth and stored it in the villa in Kayu Putih village.

The police allege that Artawan financed the illicit business, while Donisius produced the drugs. The other two suspects were the dealer and the courier.

'€œEverything found in the factory tested positive as narcotic precursor,'€ a forensic laboratory team member, Adj. Sr. Comr. Ngurah Wijaya Putra, said.

Djoko said the factory in the Buleleng villa could produce 6 kg of meth worth Rp 10.8 billion (US$901,502). The suspects said they only needed Rp 300 million to produce the meth.

Meanwhile, the Denpasar home industry could produce 1,000 ecstasy pills, worth Rp 450 million. The suspects started production with
Rp 20 million.

Djoko alleged Bali was being targeted as the island had a big drug market. '€œMaybe because Bali is a tourist destination where many people from all around the world come to vacation. They want to have fun, so some may want to have drugs,'€ he said, adding that the suspects might have chosen Bali to produce and distribute the drugs to cut distribution costs.

Djoko said the police would continue the investigation because he suspected the presence of other factories on the island.

All the suspects will be charged with violating articles 129 and 132 of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
