ublic Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto kicked off the construction of the much-anticipated Medan-Kuala Namu-Tebing Tinggi toll road project in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra on Tuesday.
Djoko said the toll road was part of a larger plan to construct the Trans-Sumatra toll road, which would span the entire island of Sumatra, from Aceh to Lampung.
The Medan-Kuala Namu-Tebing Tinggi road will play a crucial role in channeling economic growth from Kualanamu International Airport, as well as from North Sumatra's economy.
'The toll road is part of the ministry's plan to support the MP3EI [Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development] through improving road connectivity in Sumatra,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The toll road project will be managed by state-owned toll operator PT Jasa Marga, construction firm PT Waskita Karya, housing company PT Pembangunan Perumahan and contractor PT Hutama Karya.
At present, the land acquisition process for the construction of the toll road's first section has reached 81.32 percent and acquisition for the second section is already at 81.40 percent.
The first 17.8-kilometer section will connect Medan, Perbarakan and Kuala Namu while the second 44-km section will link Perbarakan and Tebing Tinggi.
'We're aiming for the first section to be finished by 2016, while the second should be completed by 2017,' he said.
