AKARTA: Newly inaugurated members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) have reelected Irman Gusman as their speaker for the 2014-2019 period.
Irman was reelected after beating his rival in the race for the DPD speakership, Farouq Muhammad, a 65-year-old Bima-based academic.
In the race, Irman, a 52-year-old Padang-based businessman won 66 votes to Farouq's 53.
'The next speaker of the DPD is Irman Gusman,' said Aidil Fitrisyah, chair of the plenary session said after voting took place.
Eight members of the DPD contested the race during a plenary session on Thursday.
The plenary session also witnessed the inauguration of Farouq and Tatiek Drajad Supriastuti, better known as Queen Hemas, the 61-year-old wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, the governor of Yogyakarta, as the deputy speakers.
