'€˜Star Wars Rebels'€™ takes aim at next generation

P

owerhouses Disney and Lucasfilm are launching their first major venture together: Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, the pilot of an animated series taking aim at the next generation of fans.

A 50-minute sneak preview shown on Sept. 28 was so far the closest in capturing the tone of the original classic that started it all, with reluctant youth joining in the fight against the evil Galactic Empire.

With Star Wars Episode VII scheduled for release by the end of 2015, Rebels is catering to three generations of Star Wars fans.

It takes place after Episode III and five years before Episode IV, when the Jedi Knights (noble warriors who draw power from the mystical '€œForce'€) were hunted down and the Rebellion was in its infancy.

Rebels introduces a motley crew who man the space vessel Ghost: Former padawan (Jedi trainee) Kanan Jarrus (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.); pilot Hera Syndulla, a Twi'€™lek (Vanessa Marshall); Lasat enforcer Zeb Morelos (Steve Blum); Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar), a Mandalorian explosive expert and at times, graffiti artist; and thegrouchy astromech droid Chopper.

In the series premiere, the band of rebels meets a Lothal street kid named Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) as they attempt to hijack supplies from the Empire.

Ezra, who has unrecognized energy that is connected to the Force, finally joins the Ghost rebels and decides to learn the ways of Jedi.

From here, longtime fans can happily spot many familiar Empire agents and spaceships and even elements from the musical score of the big-screen films.

With the appearance of both the Inquisitor, voiced by Jason Isaacs, and Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi '€” one offers a warning; the other, hope for the future '€” we might have a rough guess as to what is to come.

The pilot was written by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Greg Weisman (Young Justice) and Carrie Beck, a Lucasfilm creative executive.

The pilot will air on Oct. 4 on the Disney Channel and Oct. 5 on Disney XD.

The first season will contain 16 episodes which will be aired starting Nov. 29 on the Disney Channel and Nov. 30 on Disney XD.
