Damage control: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, accompanied by Vice President Boediono and members of the Cabinet, signs a regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on Oct
span class="inline inline-center">
Your comments on the issuance of two regulations in lieu of law (Perppu) by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to annul the newly approved Regional Elections Law, which scrapped the direct elections of regional heads in favor of indirect elections by local legislative councils.
It is reasonable for SBY to take that move. If he hadn't, all that he has done would be history.
All Indonesians knew about direct elections. SBY performed magic that mesmerized us for the past
10 years.

I told you all (in a previous comment) to stop saying bad things about this nice President and to stop calling him bad names.
He's made this Perppu and now everything will be fine and everyone will be happy.
Meanwhile, back on planet Earth in Jakarta:
'Just bring [the Perppu] on. We will decide later whether it is acceptable,' Gerindra Party executive Fadli Zon said'
'Chairman of the PKS faction, Hidayat Nur Wahid, said, 'There is no emergency situation that allows [Yudhoyono] to issue a Perppu.
If the President insists [on doing so], I believe the House will reject it.'

I wouldn't in my wildest dreams call SBY a hero. He made the biggest blunder of his life by including a 10-point plan for the House to accept and vote on but got a big thumbs down, after which he texted his tribe to march out ' led by a lady Democrat! How cool!
SBY claimed to be disappointed. So, to save his face and to overcome the damage done, he had no choice but to use the Perppu option.

The law on elections of regional heads by local legislative councils was easily passed by the House of Representatives with the help of the Democratic Party, which walked out from the voting process.
In the meantime, President SBY has already signed and endorsed this law.
To prove that he is a serious defender of the people's wishes, at the same time the President has issued a regulation in lieu of law, canceling the law he signed and reintroducing direct elections of regional heads with some improvements.
This regulation has to be approved by the House to become law. What naive mind would believe that the Red-and-White Coalition, which now includes the Democratic Party faction, would approve this regulation reverting to the principal of direct elections?
This chaotic situation is a worthy legacy of a gentleman with dubious principles.
