Smooth political transition reflects successful peaceful succession

P

resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said Indonesia'€™s smooth political transition, to be marked by the upcoming inauguration of president-elect Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo on Oct. 20, reflected the success of the Indonesian people in carrying out a peaceful and constitutional leadership transfer.

'€œHolding an election is not an easy thing. It is quite tiring, complicated and full of emotions. I think this is similar to what happens in other countries,'€ said Yudhoyono, as quoted by Antara news agency, during the opening of the 7th Bali Democracy Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday.

The president said no one had said that democracy could happen easily; however, with the inauguration of its seventh president on Oct. 20, Indonesia would prove to both its own people and the world that a transfer of power could be safe and peaceful.

'€œMembers of the House of Representatives and the People'€™s Consultative Assembly have carried out their duties since Oct. 1 and on Oct. 20 the new president, president-elect Joko Widodo, will take his oath of office,'€ said Yudhoyono.

The president further said that 135 million people had been involved in the 2014 legislative and presidential elections, and these were parts of Indonesian democracy that had continued to develop.

In his speech, Yudhoyono took the opportunity to congratulate several countries for their successful elections. Among these were Algiers, Brazil, Fiji, Iraq, Lebanon, India, Iran, Libya, the Maldives, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. (ebf)(++++)
