he fourth edition of the Pembangunan Jaya Cup junior badminton competition is set to take place on Oct. 15-18 at the Badminton Hall on Jl. Asia Afrika in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
The invitational tournament will feature under-19 shuttlers who, it is hoped, will rise to greatness in international events. They will be vying for a total of Rp 425 million (US$37,124) in prize money.
The players come from eight different clubs, namely Jaya Raya; the Candra Wijaya Badminton Club; Exist and Pelita Bakrie in Jakarta; Mutiara in Bandung, West Java; Djarum in Kudus, Central Java; Semen Gresik in Gresik, East Java, and Jaya Raya Suryanaga in Surabaya, East Java.
'Indonesia has not won a team badminton competition, such as the Sudirman, Thomas or Uber cups for years now. Hopefully, this competition, which is organized on the Sudirman Cup's format, will familiarize the young players with playing in a team,' said Rudy Hartono, chairman of the Jaya Raya badminton club and one of the country's badminton legends in his own right.
The Indonesian Badminton Association's (PBSI) head of development and achievement, Rexy Mainaky, said the tournament would help him spot new talent that could be groomed for international tournaments, especially team competitions.
'For some reason, our players perform better in individual competitions; they lack team spirit,' he said.
