Jakarta High Court rejects Wawan's appeal

T

he Jakarta High Court announced on Tuesday that it had rejected an appeal filed by graft convict Tubagus Chaeri '€œWawan'€ Wardana, a politically wired Banten businessman who is the younger brother of former Banten governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah.

"The panel of judges at the Jakarta High Court rejected the appeal file by Wawan and upheld the Jakarta Corruption Court's sentence of five years in prison and a Rp 150 million [US$12,5050] fine," Jakarta High Court spokesman Muhammad Hatta said on Tuesday.

He added that if Wawan could not pay the fine he would be required to serve another three months behind bars.

If Wawan accepts the Jakarta High Court verdict, he will soon be thrown in prison to serve his five-year prison term.

Commenting on the matter, Wawan's lawyer Pia Akbar Nasution said his client was considering challenging the Jakarta High Court'€™s decision at the Supreme Court, but that "Wawan is discussing the possibility with family members".

Wawan was found guilty of paying former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar Rp 1 billion and Rp 7.5 billion make a favorable ruling in the 2013 Lebak regency and the 2011 Banten gubernatorial election dispute cases being heard by the Constitutional Court.

He paid the bribes through lawyer Susi Tur Andayani, who was also sentenced to five years in prison in the case as instructed by Atut, who was also sentenced to four years in connection to the case.

Earlier in July, the Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Akil to life in prison for accepting bribes from a number of regional heads. He was also found guilty of laundering the money. (nfo)(++++)
