AKARTA: Ipsos Business Consulting, an independent market research company, has found that local automotive spare parts producers are well positioned to capture the automotive spare parts market in ASEAN due to the growing threat of counterfeit automotive components.
'Automotive spare parts producers in Indonesia should take advantage of the knowledge of the local market, to make them aware of which [spare parts are] imported from China,' said Domy Halim, country manager of Ipsos Business Consulting in Indonesia.
'Producers should continue to promote their capability to produce automotive components that can meet the standards of quality required by ASEAN and the world,' he said. Local automotive spare parts producers continue to confront major challenges to procuring basic materials, such as sheet metal.
In addition, many consider the Indonesia National Standard (SNI) set for local automotive spare parts to fall short of the standards set by ASEAN.
'As a consequence, apart from China, many spare parts in the market are imported from Thailand, even though foreign investment in the automotive industry has seen 120 percent growth per year from the 2010 ' 2013,' Halim said.
