PDI-P grassroots seek different figure for Bantul regent

urrent Bantul Regent Sri Surya Widati'€™s plan to run for the regent'€™s office for the second time might fall apart since the majority of members of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), to which she belongs, have apparently aimed for a different figure who wasn'€™t linked to graft allegations.

Sri'€™s husband, PDI-P politician Idham Samawi, was implicated in a case involving the embezzlement of funds allocated for the local football club, Persiba Bantul.

'€œWe will go all out to find a regent candidate whose track record is clean of graft allegations, as part of our support for President Joko '€˜Jokowi'€™ Widodo'€™s mental revolution concept,'€ head of the PDI-P'€™s Bantul branch, Rajut Sukasworo, said on Wednesday.

He said according to the party'€™s internal talent-scouting process, Suharsono had secured votes from 14 PDI-P district-level executives. Sri Surya Widati only secured votes from nine district-level executives.

He said the talent scouting results would be sent to the central executive board for further consideration.

'€œWe believe that even though it is within the central board'€™s authority to decide, they will decide wisely regarding who should be named as regent candidate,'€ he said.

The Bantul regent'€™s election will kick off next year. (dic)(+++)
