Police hand over Florence Sihombing'€™s dossier to prosecutors

T

he Yogyakarta Police say they have completed their investigation into charges of defamation allegedly perpetrated on social media by Florence Sihombing, a graduate law student from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, and handed over her case dossier to the Yogyakarta Prosecutor'€™s Office.

'€œBoth the dossier and evidence of Florence'€™s case have been completed and, based on Criminal Code procedures, the police as investigators must hand them over to prosecutors,'€ the Yogyakarta Police'€™s director for special crimes investigation, Sr. Comr. Kokot Indarto, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

He said the police handed over material on Florence including evidence and the suspect'€™s case dossier to the prosecutor'€™s office on Wednesday.

A number of community groups in Yogyakarta reported Florence to the police following comments she posted in September on Path that were deemed as insulting Yogyakarta residents. Florence was accused of violating articles 27 and 28 of Law No. 11/2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) and articles 310 and 311 of the Criminal Code.

'€œThe police did not face difficulties in investigating the case although Florence was not cooperative. She had erased her Path account; however, some people who reported the case to the police had printed her Path comments,'€ said Kokot.

Yogyakarta Prosecutor'€™s Office spokesperson Purwanta Sudarmaji said the office had received Florence'€™s dossier from the police. The office decided that Florence would not be detained, however.

'€œProsecutors consider that there is no need to detain Florence. We believe that she will not escape or make evidence materials disappear,'€ said Purwanta, adding that it was expected Florence'€™s dossier could be handed over to the Yogyakarta District Court within one week. (ebf)(+++)
