Garuda, police tight-lipped on staff assault case

A

high-ranking officer from the Riau Islands Police headquarters allegedly hit an employee of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, Abdul Gani, at Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam on Friday.

The incident was immediately publicized by the company. However, on Monday, both Garuda Indonesia management and the Riau Islands Police refused to discuss the issue further, claiming that the two parties has reached a peaceful reconciliation

'€œThere is no longer a problem. It has been settled peacefully,'€ Riau Islands Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Hartono told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Meanwhile, Timbul Panjaitan, Garuda Indonesia'€™s station manager at Hang Nadim International Airport, requested journalists to cease reporting the incident.

Spokesman Dwi Djoko Wiwoho of the Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency (BP FTZ), which runs the airport, said he had not been informed of the '€œpeaceful agreement'€. He expressed regret that Garuda Indonesia was reluctant to share information about the settlement of the incident.

The incident took place when Abdul asked passengers to queue at boarding time. When he invited passengers with seat numbers 21 to 31 to board the plane, the police officer, who had seat number 28, suddenly punched the victim.
