s the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Gerindra Party continue to wrangle over the vacant deputy governor post, acting governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama has reiterated his desire for Sarwo '€œYani'€ Handayani, who was recently appointed as a member of the Governor'€™s Team for Development Supervision (TGUPP), to be nominated for deputy governor.

'€œI want Bu Yani to keep helping me [...] If the decision on the deputy governorship is in my hands, I will appoint her as the new deputy governor.'€

Ahok said that according to the government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on direct regional elections, he possessed the right to select his deputy governor.

'€œYani is very capable in handling city issues. She understands every aspect of the administration'€™s programs,'€ he said.

The PDI-P and Gerindra have each claimed the right to nominate a candidate for the city'€™s No. 2 position.

Yani, who has served in other important posts, including as head of the Jakarta Development Planning Board, assistant to the city secretary on development and head of the Parks and Cemeteries Agency, was entrusted with handling several major projects, including the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD), the monorail and six toll roads.

Ahok added that he trusted in Yani'€™s credibility and professionalism. '€œI have known her for two years now. I believe that she does not take bribes,'€ he said.

Ahok said that even if Yani failed to secure the deputy governor post, he would retain her as a member of the TGUPP.

'€œIf my deputy governor is from a political party, he or she needs more time to learn about the city programs, while I only have three years to implement them,'€ he said.

Ahok said appointing Yani as his deputy governor was also in accordance with his pledge to '€œgive the highest appreciation to the best civil servants'€, he said.

Responding to Ahok'€™s remarks, Yani said she was thankful to be considered for a position.

'€œI am ready if the governor appoints me to become his deputy,'€ she said.
