ice President Jusuf Kalla said heappreciated the roles of inter-religious leaders in efforts to encourage andmaintain peaceful conditions during this year's elections.
'Religious leaders have succeeded in teaching people about the importance of maintaining a peaceful democracy,' he told the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) national conference in Jakarta on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Religious leaders had helped maintain unity and security in the country, he added.
The annual ceremony was also attended by several Cabinet ministers, namely Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, and Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa.
NU chairman Said Aqil Siraj and former first lady Sinta Nuriyah Wahid also attended the ceremony. (alz)
