The U
he U.S. Air Force's new commander in the Pacific says she's hoping to continue talks with China on avoiding dangerous encounters in the air.
Gen. Lori Robinson said Saturday she hopes a speaking engagement at China's biggest air show later this month will allow her to renew dialogue on the issue.
Robinson said in a telephone interview from Hawaii that the U.S. hopes all parties will adhere to generally recognized rules for safety in flight.
The issue was spotlighted after a Chinese fighter jet came within 9 meters (30 feet) of a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon plane in August.
China's declaration last year of an air-defense identification zone over disputed islands in the East China Sea has also increased tensions, along with an ongoing territorial dispute with Japan.
