Young actor Ernest Samudera keeps himself updated with the latest works of his favorite Indonesian authors.
Ernest, cast in the recently released Tiga Nafas Likas (Likas' Three Breaths), is a Japanese comic reader and collector of classic manga, the like of Ninja Hattori, Doraemon and Detective Conan.
The 25-year-old, who started out his acting career in independent movies, has learned about character development from novels.
'I learned about human character and how people deal with life from the novels,' said the admirer of Dee Lestari and Ahmad Fuadi, the author of Negeri 5 Menara (The Land of Five Towers) trilogy.
Ernest, who also has biographies of world famous people on his bookshelf, usually buys at least five books at one go and finishes reading them in three to five months.
'I read for a shorter time every morning inside and outside the bathroom,' he quipped. 'But during shooting breaks, I spend whole day reading in my room.'

I first read the novel when I
was studying in Malaysia. The story is about friendships and the
struggle to keep dreams alive. It describes the beauty of Indonesia and
that has awakened my national pride. I believed from then on that
Indonesia is better in all aspects than other countries.

I know I'm still young and have no knowledge about married life, but the story impressively describes husband and wife relationships and how they deal with pressures of climbing the career ladder while keeping their marriage intact. From this novel, I learned how valuable family is.

I like the flow of the story in these science fiction novels. A bit absurd, but it kept me going reading. I haven't found other novels of the same genre as interesting as the trilogy.
