massive fire broke out at the SMA 3 senior high school on Jl. Yos Sudarso, Pekanbaru, Riau, at around 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Students were given leave as virtually the entire building, including 30 classrooms, were engulfed by the blaze.
Almost no residents attempted to put out the fire as most of them were asleep at the time.
As many as 10 fire trucks deployed by the Pekanbaru Disaster Mitigation Agency were late to arrive, since they had to take a detour.
The fire trucks could not pass the Leighton Bridge or Siak I Bridge, which provided easiest access to the scene of the fire, because they were blocked by a steel portal that is used to prevent overweight trucks from crossing the old bridge.
Students who arrived at school before the bell rang were shocked to see the condition of the school. Some of them cried after seeing their lab, computer room, classrooms and mosque reduced to ashes. (***)
