espite some passing showers, the 2014 Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific (EAP) Men'€™s Trophy, which is a 20 overs tournament, kicked off on Wednesday at the Oakes Oval precinct in Lismore, New South Wales.

For Indonesia, it was a gloomy opening day as it lost both its matches, according to a press release from the Jakarta Cricket Association. While PNG, Vanuatu and Samoa each won both their matches, Japan had a mixed day with one win and one loss.

In the first round, Indonesia sent Fiji to bat first on a tricky Blair Oval wicket. Fiji did well to score 152/4 in 20 overs, with Giles Smith scoring 56 runs. Indonesia was never in the game and could only muster 64 runs in 20 overs and eventually lost by 88 runs.

In other first-round matches, Vanuatu (63/4 in 11 overs) beat the Philippines (62 all out in 17 overs) by 6 wickets. PNG (121/2 in 9 overs) defeated Cook Islands (117 all out in 20 overs) by 8 wickets. Samoa (166/6 in 20 overs) overran Japan (146/9 in 20 overs) by 20 runs.

The highlight of the first round was PNG'€™s Lega Siaka, who scored an incredible 88 of just 29 balls (including 10 sixes and 6 fours) against Cook Islands.

In the second round, Japan hammered Indonesia by 10 wickets. Electing to bat first, Indonesia struggled to reach 98/7 in 20 overs. Japan reached the victory target in 9 overs without losing any wickets. '€œIt was a bad day for us. We tried our best. We have 5 more games to go and with a bit of luck we can turn it around'€, said Indonesia captain William Noronha.

In other second- round matches, PNG (158/8 in 20 overs) beat Fiji (136/6 in 20 overs) by 22 runs. Vanuatu (82/5 in 9.3 overs) beat Cook Islands (80 all out in 20 overs) by 5 wickets. Samoa (156/6 in 20 overs) beat the Philippines (154/8 in 20 overs) by 4 wickets.

The highlight of the second round was Japan'€™s H. Khan, who scored 72 runs off 32 balls (including 9 fours and 3 sixes) against Indonesia.
