ndonesian artist Antonius Subiyanto has won the 2014 UOB Southeast Asian painting award for his acrylic painting titled Old Stock Fresh Menu. Subiyanto's work beat three other paintings from the neighboring countries of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Subiyanto said his work was greatly inspired by life experiences in a village in Yogyakarta.
'My artwork is about a culture of tolerance and empathy. It is inspired by the day-to-day life in Yogyakarta, where I find that there is excessive consumption,' Subiyanto said in a press release sent to The Jakarta Post on Friday.
All the winning paintings are being exhibited at UOB Plaza in Raffles Place, Singapore, from Nov. 28.
Commenting on this, UOB group deputy chairman and CEO Wee Ee Cheong acknowledged he was grateful to see how the painting competition had contributed greatly to the awareness and appreciation of art in the region.
The UOB painting competition dates back to 1982 and had the initial aim of drawing hidden talent in Singapore. It went regional five years ago with the aim of netting a wider range of talent. (dic)(++++)
