Sriwijaya to connect Medan with Terengganu, Ipoh

P

rivately owned carrier Sriwijaya Air is going to connect its hub in Medan, North Sumatra with two destinations in Malaysia, Terengganu and Ipoh, next week in order to accommodate increasing demand from the travel market.

The carrier's senior corporate communications manager Agus Soedjono said that Sriwijaya would launch both routes on Monday, operating the Boeing B747-400 aircraft, which has a total capacity of 167 passengers.

'€œWe are hoping to repeat our success on the Medan-Penang route, which we opened six years ago. We will fly three times a week to Terengganu and four times a week to Ipoh,'€ Agus told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

He said that the carrier would fly daily to both cities in the future if the market responded positively to the services.

The carrier expected to see an 87 percent passenger load factor on its new routes.

'€œWe are very optimistic that we can achieve it because we work closely with our partner, YOU Wings, which markets our services in Malaysia,'€ he added.

In addition, he said that they planned to increase their Medan-Penang route from a daily flight to a twice-a-day flight in the near future because of healthy demand from passengers.

Sriwijaya Air, the third-largest carrier in the country after Lion Air and Garuda Indonesia, currently operates 36 aircraft from the Boeing family including B737-800 Next Generation (NG)s, B737-500s, B7373-400s, and B737-300s flying to more than 50 destinations across the archipelago and the ASEAN region.

By the end of the year, the figure will rise to 38 aircraft since they will receive two more B737-800NGs. (++++)
