DPD wants a role in MD3 law deliberation

T

he Regional Representatives Council (DPD) has demanded to be involved in the deliberation of an amendment to the Legislative Institutions (MD3) Law, which has been part of the peace pact between two conflicting coalitions at the House of Representatives.

'€œIt will be against the Constitution if the House does not involve us,'€ DPD deputy speaker Farouk Muhammad told reporters on Sunday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Farouk said that Article 22 Point D of the Constitution stipulates that DPD members have the right to propose and deliberate any bill related to regional autonomy, along with the House and the government.

He said that local legislative councils (DPRD), an object regulated under the law, are the observers of regional autonomy in their respective region, making the law deliberation a responsibility of the DPD.

The ruling Great Indonesia Coalition and opposition bloc Red-and-White Coalition have signed a deal to end weeks of discord over the distribution of power at the House.

As the majority, the Red-and-White Coalition has secured speaker and deputy speaker positions at the House and was on its way to acquire leadership for all House commissions and other internal bodies, a move which was blocked by the ruling coalition.

Hence, the revision to the law, which has legalized the domination of the Red-and-White Coalition, was a focal point in the peace pact.

The law deliberation did not make significant progress last week. (***)
