Judicial Commission ex-clerk gets five years

T

he Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday sentenced a former Judicial Commission (KY) official to five years in prison for embezzling Rp 4.5 billion (US$ 370,400) intended for trial hearings and complaint-related programs.

The panel of judges at the court also ordered the KY official, Al Jona Al Kautsar, to pay Rp 250 million in fines. Should he fail to do so, he will have to serve an additional three months behind bars.

'€œOur investigation into the case during the trial has found the defendant guilty of corruption,'€ presiding Judge Artha Theresia stated at the court on Monday.

The Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) first investigated the case in January when the KY reported irregularities in the Rp 4.5 billion-budget. Three months later, the AGO declared Al Jona a graft suspect.

The embezzled money was intended for programs managed by the KY over the 2009-2013 period. The court found Al Jona had misused his authority as a staffer at the KY treasury by channeling the money to his own bank accounts over a period of five years.

In addition to the verdict, the court said that Al Jona was guilty of committing mark-ups when making budget recapitulations for officers working at the KY complaints division and officers arranging trial hearings with regard to cases being heard at the Commission.

'€œThe defendant manipulated the budget recapitulations for KY officials during the 2009-2013 period,'€ judge Aviantara said.

In 2009, Al Jona transferred Rp 166 million to his bank account, while in 2010 he funneled around Rp 1.1 billion to his own pocket followed by another Rp 1.5 billion in 2011. A year later, he embezzled a total of Rp 1.4 billion from KY and he also took as much as Rp 217 million in 2013 from KY coffers.
