Concurrent polls likely to run at the end of 2015

H

ouse of Representatives deputy speaker Ahmad Riza Patria of Commission II overseeing domestic governance and regional autonomy says that it is likely direct elections of regional heads in several regions across Indonesia will take place at the end of 2015.

He said the House was preparing for a discussion on former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono'€™s government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) on regional elections (Pilkada), the legal basis of the concurrent elections.

Later this week, House Commission II will hold a meeting with the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), followed by meetings with a number of constitutional law experts.

'€œA number of law experts, such as Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Margarito Kamis and Irman Putra Sidin, will be invited to give input,'€ said Riza as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.

After the consultations, Riza said, Commission II will hold an internal meeting.

The lawmaker said the meeting to discuss the Perppu No.1 would take place in early 2015 and should be finished by February of next year.

Riza, a politician from the Gerindra Party, went on to say that the completion of discussions on the Perppu No.1 did not necessarily mean that elections of regional heads would again be made direct, as the House'€™s position on the Perppu was still unpredictable. (***)
