slump in energy prices pushed the stock market back from record levels on Tuesday. Energy stocks fell as the price of oil resumed its descent. Traders speculated that member nations of the oil-producing group OPEC would fail to agree on production cuts at an upcoming meeting.
Tuesday:
The Dow dropped 2.96 points, or 0.02 percent, to 17,814.94.
The S&P 500 index fell 2.38 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,067.03.
The Nasdaq composite rose 3.36 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,758.25.
For the week:
The Dow is up 4.88 points, or 0.03 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 3.53 points, or 0.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 45.28 points, or 1 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,238.28 points, or 7.5 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 218.67 points, or 11.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 581.66 points, or 13.9 percent. (***)
