myGADGET; Dyah Pratitasari: Connecting to help others

A

s a health activist, Dyah Pratitasari relies on her gadgets to get connected and to help those in need.

The creator of Gentle Birth Untuk Semua (Gentle Birth for Everyone), an online-based support group to help empower women during their pregnancy and labor, uses a smartphone and a laptop to run the forum, which has grown into a community with various activities, including prenatal yoga sessions.

Dyah, a birth doula (labor coach) and breast-feeding counselor, motivates pregnant women to enjoy their pregnancies and to empower themselves ahead of labor '€” as well as uses emails and messages on Facebook to encourage new mothers to breast-feed their babies.

'€œGadgets also play an important role in providing a way to have online meetings '€” especially when our community is about to organize events. With a list of facilities that Facebook has offered, we can share files, presentations, videos and even audio,'€ says the writer of Makan Sayur Seasyik Bermain (Eating Vegetables for Fun).

As a stay-at-home mother, Dyah, the former managing editor of Nirmala magazine, says that gadgets have helped her to learn, do positive things and get connected without too much trouble.

Dyah, a recipient of the 2012 Perempuan Inspiratif (Inspiring Woman) award from Nova magazine, needs gadgets but she refuses to be too dependent on them.

Smartphone
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2

This smartphone is affordable and has numerous features that are good enough for me. I mostly use it to communicate via WhatsApp and get online on the Internet. I rarely use it to make phone calls or send text messages. Spending some six to eight hours with the smartphone, my all-time favorite application on it is WhatsApp.

Laptop
Asus VivoBook S200E

It is affordable, has a beautiful look and is quite slim, making it handy to carry around. It also has a touchscreen feature, so I don'€™t need a tablet computer.

I use it to write '€” therefore, my favorite application is Microsoft Word '€” to make media promotions and to edit photos. I spend about six to eight hours a day in front of my laptop.

Digital camera
Canon EOS 30D and Canon EOS 700D

As a birth photographer, I simply fell in love with Canon cameras '€” but I don'€™t know exactly why.
