s many as 1,500 officers from the East Jakarta chapter of the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) are set to be deployed to guard more than 100 churches in East Jakarta, particularly the ones located in violence-prone areas.
'We will deploy 1,500 officers to guard 158 churches in East Jakarta to ensure security in the areas,' East Jakarta Public Order Agency operational unit head Agus Sidiki said on Wednesday.
Among the churches were Kramatjati Batak Church, Pasara Pentecostal Church and Koinonia Church.
The City Police will also support the security measures, he added.
'The City Police remain the leader of security measures during Christmas and New Year's eve,' Agus said.
Security measures during Christmas has become common to anticipate terror attacks. A number of churches in Jakarta, including Koinonia Church in Jatinegara and St. Yoseph Catholic Church in Matraman, both in East Jakarta, were rocked by a series of bombings on Christmas eve in 2000.
A year later, two powerful blasts also disrupted the Sunday services at Santa Anna Catholic Church and the Huriah Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP) Church in the Army residential complex, both in East Jakarta. (***)
