President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo reiterated his tough stance against illegal foreign fishing on Monday, reminding people that tight control of the country'€™s territorial waters holds the key to the country'€™s future.

Jokowi made the statement during the commemoration of Nusantara Day, or Archipelago Day, which was based on the Djuanda Declaration of Dec. 13, 1957, which marked the beginning of the country being acknowledged as an archipelagic state, in Kotabaru, South Kalimantan.

Pak Jokowi, great visions need attention to detail. It'€™s no good sinking a few dinghies and junk boats when the real problem is our fish unloading docks cannot offer to our fishermen purchase prices as competitive as the foreign mother ships that buy their catches.

You see, Mr. President, the middlemen there tend to benefit from a lack of infrastructure that would enable our fishermen to sell directly to the highers-up in the supply chain.

At the same time, because access to the market is difficult, our fishermen are forced to sell at a near-loss.

It is easier for them to simply sell their catch offshore to the foreign mother ships.

So unless you deal with this issue, you'€™re not solving the problem for our fishermen, the very people you'€™re trying to help, whose livelihood was the center piece of your election campaign.

After all, you cannot change the economics of the supply chain. No matter how many boats you sink.

Yes Pak Jokowi, I agree with your policy. Can you also deal with those foreign ships that were flying the Indonesian flag when they got caught?
