resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo is scheduled to attend the 10th anniversary commemoration of the tsunami along with 33 representatives from international non-governmental organizations, in Banda Aceh, on Friday.
'We have made sure that he will attend the event in Aceh unless something urgent arises,' said Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah in a press conference on Monday.
The 10th anniversary commemoration is also a form of appreciation and expression of gratitude from the Aceh people and administration for the assistance and participation of various parties in helping Aceh rebound and recover from the tsunami catastrophe 10 years ago.
'Aceh was not only devastated by the tsunami, but also by the prolonged conflict then. So, the role and assistance of the parties was one of the factors which uplifted Aceh,' said Zaini.
The earthquake and tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004 had caused considerable human and economic loss to Aceh. Based on data released by the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR Aceh-Nias), 126,741 people were killed, 95,285 people went missing, 500,00 people were displaced and 750,000 people lost their jobs and suffered severe depression and deep trauma.
