he Jakarta Police Traffic division is to regulate the large motorcycles, especially Harley Davidsons, to net any illegal ones.
City Traffic Police enforcement head Adj. Sr. Comr. Hindarsono said on Friday that the National Police chief had ordered all the regional police offices to enforce new rules on big bikes in the country.
'We received the order to regulate large motorcycles at the end of December,' he said.
He said, however, that upcoming raids had nothing to do with the case of a Harley Davidson rider who fled while being ticketed by police officers on Jan. 18.
Darsono said his personnel had been ordered to record the existence of illegal Harley Davidsons that used fake vehicle ownership documents (STNK) and license plate numbers.
'We will flag them down and confiscate any motorcycles that do not have a complete set of documents,' he said, as quoted by tribunnews.com over the weekend.
The owner of a Harley Davidson motorcycle who fled when he was ticketed by traffic police on Jl. MH Thamrin on Jan. 18 surrendered himself to Jakarta Police last Thursday.
City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said the man had been identified as Yudi Hadi Kurnia, 43, a businessman from North Petukangan, Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta.
'He bought the motorcycle for Rp 150 million [US$12,038] without securing proper documents,' Martinus said over the weekend.
He was charged with violating Article 288 (1) of the 2009 law on traffic and land transportation for failing to show his vehicle documents.
Yudi was initially stopped by four traffic police officers because he passed through Jl. MH Thamrin, an area of restricted motorcycle use, whereupon he was unable to show the proper vehicle documents.
'In this case, Yudi not only violated the motorcycle restriction on the street, but also forged the license plate,' Darsono said.
He said the rider also did not have a driving license for a motorcycle.
'He also cannot show the purchasing receipt from the dealer,' he said, adding that the motorcycle was still in the police's possession.
