Wantimpres looks into KPK-police conflict

T

he Presidential Advisory Board (Wantimpres) has begun investigating the conflict between the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

'€œOn Monday, Pak Sidharto [Dhanusubroto] met deputy police chief Comr. Badrodin Haiti while Pak Hasyim [Muzadi] met with the KPK leaders,'€ Wantimpres member Suharso Manoarfa said on Tuesday.

He said Wantimpres, which is also known as Presidential Fact-finding Team 7, met leaders of the two institutions on Monday and would meet relevant officials of the two institutions while monitoring closely all cases implicating officials from the two institutions.

The seven-member team was asked by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo to investigate the conflict after the public called on the President to take action to settle it.

Tensions rose after the KPK named police chief candidate Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan a suspect in a graft case, prompting the President to suspend Budi'€™s inauguration.

The police then arrested KPK deputy chief Bambang Widjojanto as a suspect for his alleged involvement in encouraging perjury when the Constitutional Court tried the election dispute in West Kotawaringin regency in July 2010.

Budi was named a suspect for allegedly accepting a huge amount of money when he was National Police headquarters career development division chief from 2004 to 2006.

Two other KPK deputies, Adnan Pandu Praja and Zulkarnain, were also reported to the police for their alleged involvement in crimes before they joined the KPK in 2010.

Suharso declined to reveal the team'€™s temporary findings to the media and said the findings would only be reported to the President.

'€œWe cannot answer whether we will give recommendations to the President or not,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

He added that according to the law, Wantimpres was required to give input, upon request or not, to the President when the nation faced a national-level problem such as the KPK-police conflict. (rms)(++++)
