ICMI urges President to accept recommendations of Team of Nine

T

he chairman of the presidium of the Association of Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI), Nanat Fatah Natsir, has urged President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to immediately make a decision on the recommendation of the Team of Nine formed to help overcome issues between the police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

"The President should not delay and lose the momentum. He should consult with the House of Representatives to review the sole candidate for police chief," Nanat said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the Team of Nine had offered a number of reasonable recommendations to the President to solve the conflict, adding that he should not disappoint the team that he himself had formed.

The team has recommended that Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan not be installed as the National Police chief as he has been named a corruption suspect by the KPK.

"I support the recommendations of the Team of Nine. The President should reaffirm his commitment to eradicating corruption and upholding the law," he said.

The team, comprising nine law experts, a former chief of police and KPK, and other respected leaders, has submitted a five point recommendation to Jokowi.

One of the recommendations is that Jokowi should be consistent in the principle that any law enforcement official declared a suspect should resign to protect the reputation the law enforcement agency he or she represents, be it the police force or the KPK. (hhr)(++++)
