ore than 1.2 million drug addicts in the country had experienced severe health problems and were in need of immediate medical care, National Narcotics Agency (BNN) spokesman Slamet Rihadi said on Friday.
'Of the 4.2 million drug addicts in Indonesia, 1.2 million need immediate medical care,' said Slamet as quoted by Antara news agency, after visiting the Lido rehabilitation center for drug addicts in Bogor, West Java.
Slamet said the number of drug addicts in the country had increased in the past three years. Most of the drug addicts were methamphetamine users, he said.
President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo recently declared that Indonesia was in a state of emergency over drugs.
Several measures have been taken to mitigate the problem, including by sending drug addicts to free rehabilitation programs.
'Drug addicts should not be afraid to report themselves. They will later be sent to free rehabilitation programs,' Slamet said.
