he provinces of North Sumatra, Aceh and Riau will likely face temporary blackouts due to a lack of power following the collapse of three high-voltage transmission towers from Pangkalansusu power plant in Tangungparis subdistrict, Langkat, North Sumatra, on Feb. 17.
The three towers collapsed after they were hit by strong winds. The towers were already in a weakened state due to several of their iron beams being stolen.
Blackouts have been scheduled for next week after economic activities in the three provinces returned to normal following Chinese New Year celebrations on Thursday.
The manager of state electricity company PLN's northern Sumatra region, Robert Aprianto Purba, said the three towers were identified as No. 214, 215 and 216.
At the incident site, police officers discovered that many components of the towers had been stolen, which had led to the towers easily collapsing amid strong winds during heavy rain on Tuesday, kompas.com reported.
Robert said it would take at least two months to repair the damaged towers due to the remote locations of the facilities.
To ensure the continuation of the power supplies, five emergency towers would be built in the next six to seven days, he said.
"The power will be delivered using the emergency towers until Feb. 25, and the supplies through the transmission are expected to be back to normal by April 18," he added. (hhr)
