City Council downplays Ahok'€™s KPK report

T

he Jakarta City Council leadership has downplayed a report by Jakarta Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama on alleged markups in Jakarta'€™s draft 2015 city budget, saying the public would realize who was wrong because the internal row had been brought into the public sphere.

City Council Speaker Prasetio Edi Marsudi voiced appreciation for the governor'€™s move to report the case to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) because with the report, the whole issue would become public knowledge.

'€œGood, it will be revealed to the public. So we will be open to the public about our inquiry into the case,'€ kompas.com quoted him as saying here on Friday.

Ahok officially reported the City Council to the KPK over the inclusion of programs worth Rp 12.1 trillion in Jakarta'€™s draft 2015 city budget without the city administration'€™s knowledge. He accused the council of attempting to steal taxpayer money through what he referred to as '€œinvisible'€ programs.

City Council Deputy Speaker Mohammad Taufik but said he and the other 105 councilors had no intention of reporting the governor for submitting a '€œfake'€ draft budget to the Home Ministry for approval.

'€œJust relax, any neighbor could also report me. Anyone can file a report. The City Council does not fear the report. We have agreed to investigate the governor and we are waiting for the results,'€ he said. (rms)(+++)
