tate-run train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will increase fares by between 30 and 60 percent beginning the first day of April following a Transportation Ministerial decree no.17/2015 on the adjustment of the train-services tariff.
Hanggoro Budi Wiryawan, the traffic and transportation director at the ministry's railway directorate general, said long-distance train services, such as Jakarta'Surabaya and Jakarta'Banyuwangi, would see the biggest price increases.
'The biggest increase will be implemented in the long-distance route. We are going to give more PSO [public service obligation] funds to the short- and medium-distance services since they have more customers,' Hanggoro said in Jakarta on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the train ticket price would rise between Rp 80,000 (US$6.16) and Rp 115,000 per trip for long-distance train service in April.
He added that a number of factors had pushed the ministry to set the new fares, including the rupiah trade-rate against the US dollar, which currently stands at around Rp 12,800 per US dollar, as well as the fuel-subsidy cut. (nfo)(+++)
