resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo held a meeting on Friday with the five leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the first meeting after Jokowi installed three new interim KPK leaders following rifts between the antigraft body and the National Police.
According to Johan Budi, one of three KPK interim commissioners, Jokowi asked them about the current conditions of internal affairs in the KPK after Jokowi installed the three new interim leaders, as well as about efforts to bring KPK back to its performance before the KPK-police rifts.
"We hope the problems that emerged will soon be settled," Johan said. "And the President also conveys a similar message that the KPK and other law enforcement institutions should focus on working as usual and later to speed up corruption eradication."
On Wednesday, Jokowi summoned KPK interim chairman Taufiequrachman Ruki, along with the National Police deputy chief Badrodin Haiti, who is now in charge of police chief tasks, and Attorney General M. Prasetyo into a closed-door meeting at the State Palace.
Jokowi, at that time, publicy reiterated his call for better synergy between the three institutions following the rivalry between the KPK and the police, telling them to put aside their "sectoral egos".
According to Johan, the KPK also told Jokowi about the importance of carrying out their programs -- both related to prevention and law enforcement -- which were planned before the KPK-police rifts occurred.
"So, it is not true that the KPK only prioritizes prevention measures. Prevention and prosecution measures are currently done simultaneously and will be continued synergistically in the future."
Johan made the statement amid speculation that KPK, under Ruki's temporary leadership, might only focus on preventative measures.
On Wednesday, the President also told the three institutions "to truly be serious in handling corruption cases" and later highlighted the importance of prioritizing preventative efforts. (nfo)(+++)
