A strong whirlwind damaged at least 120 houses in three villages in Ngawi regency, East Java, on Thursday
evening, according to local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) spokesman Eko Heru Tjahjono.
"The whirlwind swept through the villages of Geneng, Ngawi Kota and Paron, and destroyed hundreds of houses, but luckily there were no casualties in the disaster," Tjahjono said in Ngawi on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He explained that based on preliminary reports, Geneng bore the brunt of the whirlwind, with many houses heavily damaged.
"We are still collecting data to find out the exact number of houses destroyed in the disaster," Tjahjono said, adding that the whirlwind lasted a few minutes but caused considerable and devastating damage. (hhr)
