resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo reiterated on Monday his firm decisions on two controversial topics: executing death row convicts, both local and foreign, and curbing rampant illegal fishing by foreign vessels in Indonesian waters.
Jokowi made these remarks while delivering a speech to the students of Taruna Nusantara high school, an elite high school that employs militaristic discipline, at the State Palace on Monday.
'Do you agree with the death penalty for drug dealers?' Jokowi asked the students, after mentioning that rampant drug trafficking was harming the country's younger generations.
The students immediately replied in agreement.
Jokowi also reinstated his firm call not to grant clemency for death row convicts pleading for clemency amid efforts and pressure from foreign countries to save the lives of their citizens who will soon face execution.
'I underline there is no clemency for drug dealers,' Jokowi said, later pointing out that no other countries could interfere with Indonesia's execution policy, since it was a matter of the country's legal sovereignty.
Jokowi reiterated that the country's tough policy of sinking boats that illegally fish in Indonesian waters would not soon be changing. The President also reminded the students about the importance of stopping illegal logging.
'Don't let our resources, which will be managed by you in the future, be stolen,' he said, adding that it was important to play a role in boosting environmental sustainability in marine areas across the country.
According to Jokowi, the students could participate by preparing themselves to provide better human resources in the future.
Jokowi said they must master technology, understand the world from a global perspective and have soft skills. 'Confidence, discipline and integrity are required,' he said.
During the event, Jokowi also held a question-and-answer session with three students.
Aiming to build a better future for the country, one of the students told the President that he wanted to become a National Police chief, another said he wanted to become a finance minister and the last planned to be a cosmetic doctor.
