he office of the Yogyakarta directorate general of tax and Wirogunan Penitentiary in Yogyakarta have prepared a special cell for tax evaders. As many as four Yogyakarta residents will be held in the cell for non-payment of taxes.
'This is part of the measures implemented between the directorate general of taxes and the Justice and Human Rights Ministry to provide a place for tax offenders,' Yogyakarta directorate general of taxes office head Rudy Gunawan Bastari told the media at Wirogunan prison on Thursday.
Rudy said a cell was only available at Wirogunan prison and was not intended to intimidate tax payers, rather being a law-enforcement measure based on the Tax Law. After inspecting the special cell, Rudy said it was adequate.
'Putting tax evaders in the cell is a last resort should other efforts fail to force them to pay their taxes to the state,' said Rudy.
Tax evaders in Yogyakarta currently owe Rp 300 billion (US$23 million) to the state. They have not so far been punished.
'In the near future, four people will be put in the cell for overdue taxes,' said Rudy.
