raft convict Anas Urbaningrum, former chairman of the Democratic Party, has launched an appeal against the Jakarta High Court's recent decision to reduce his prison term to seven years.
Anas' lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution said that Anas was undeterred by the prospect that his appeal would be handled by Supreme Court Justice Artidjo Alkotsar, who is notorious for increasing prison terms for graft convicts.
'This is the risk we have to take; we will accept whatever decision is made by the Supreme Court,' Adnan said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The Jakarta High Court has reduced Anas' sentence to seven years, following an appeal.
The Jakarta Corruption Court had sentenced Anas to eight years in prison in September last year for his role in the Hambalang sports complex graft case.
The court accepted prosecutors' claims that Anas had used the bribe money from the Hambalang project and other government projects to fund his campaign to become the Democratic Party chairman in 2010.
It was former Democratic Party treasurer and graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin who first alleged that Anas had accepted bribes from PT Adikarya, a state-owned contractor involved in the graft-ridden sports complex project.
