Islands in focus: Auction held to support prison artists

A

n art auction will be carried out at Hard Rock Cafe in Kuta, Bali, on Friday, presenting around 90 paintings by prisoners and ex-prisoners of Kerobokan Penitentiary. The auction is being held in support of the ongoing art program at the prison, which was set up by Myuran Sukumaran, a member of the Bali Nine drug ring currently awaiting execution.

'€œKerobokan officials have allowed the event to be organized to raise awareness and funds to continue the rehabilitation programs in the prison,'€ explained Meg Wolk, an Australian teacher who volunteered to organize the auction.

At the auction, some of Sukumaran'€™s paintings will also be exhibited, but none will be for sale. Among Sukumaran'€™s paintings is a portrait of President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, signed '€œpeople can change'€, which was made after the President rejected Sukumaran'€™s clemency appeal.

Wolk said that starting prices for paintings at the auction had been set and only people in attendance would be able to place bids. '€œNo online buying, cash-only payment at the event,'€ she said.
